Schools

One Man's e-Waste is Another Man's Treasure

Step your way up to help the schools this weekend and next.

This weekend is loaded with chances to help the schools, and you can even help save the planet (and your garage space) at one of the events.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, is holding a one-day free e-waste fundraiser. Novato residents and non-residents can recycle loads of household electronics, including TVs, fax machines, phones, VCRs and DVD players, toasters, vacuums, computers, radios, and so on. Remember, e-waste is considered a hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in the trash. Items can be working or not. So go through that garage of yours and bring all of those electronics down. You clear away some clutter, Hamilton makes some money, and together you go one step toward saving the planet. If you need more information, email Cassie Alciati.

There’s still time to sponsor a student in the school walkathon also happening on Saturday, April 28. According to the event website, “last year's Walkathon raised over $5,000, and resulted in Principal getting a buzz cut, live, and in front of the whole school. Our goal this year is $40,000, so who knows what is in store for the principal and the whole staff?” That “audacious” goal of $40,000 is all earmarked toward bringing the technology hardware needed to support the goal that all Lynwood kids are “proficient in English language arts, math, and written language by grade three.”  You can support a child in the walkathon by visiting the event website and going to the “Sponsor a child” button.

So, once you’ve recycled your e-waste and supported the walkathon on Saturday, why not head over to On Sunday, April 29, to take part in the “Drive One 4 UR School” event supporting ? From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., come in, test drive a new Ford car or truck, and Ford Motor Company will kick in $20 to the NHS sport of your choice and Journey Ford will kick in another $5 to the NHS Sports Boosters general fund. It’s a snap. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and there is no pressure to buy. Anyone 18 or older with a valid driver’s license can drive.
