Let Them Entertain Us

A little Bob Dylan and a lot of talented Novato kids.

Nine days from now Bob Dylan, turns 70 years old. (Good thing time is relative, because he's aging much more quickly than I.) I've been a Bob Dylan fan for as long as I can remember. Some of his songs are ageless and relevant today as they were decades ago:

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yes, how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea ?
Yes, how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free ?
Yes, how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn't see ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Anybody out there have a spare plane ticket to New York? I'd really love see "Arcadia" on Broadway. It is an absolutely brilliant play and Tom Stoppard is a genius. I hope it makes it here.

Speaking of theater, et al, I had the pleasure of seeing some great performances this weekend. On Friday night, the San Francisco State choir performed Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." Novato's own Eric Levintow was one of the singers of this fabulous piece. The next afternoon I saw Terra Linda's terrific production of King Lear, featuring two members of the Marin Summer Theater, Jane Reagan and Andy De Leon. San Marin's last performance of "Jane Eyre" is Monday night. I saw it opening night and I'm thinking of catching it again.

Speaking of Marin Summer Theater, if you haven't seen their productions yet, you don't know what you're missing. With cast members ranging from middle school to college, they have put on exciting performances of "Chicago", "Rosencranz and Guildenstern are Dead" and "Sweeney Todd" among others, and played to sold out houses almost every show. This year's should be just as good, with "West Side Story" and "Song for a New World" on the ticket. Don't miss it. (Full disclosure: my very talented daughter will be singing and dancing, and my very talented wife will be heading up the makeup crew.)

What are the chances I can get the Keli and George Gasparini to adopt me? They have raised four wonderful and incredibly talented kids, and I'm thinking maybe I could get some of that talent to rub off on me. Maybe I can learn to sing without people cluthching their ears and stampeding out of the room. Is there an age limit for adoption?
