Novato Fire Sets Rucker Memorial Tournament Date

Proceeds from the Sept. 9 event benefit the Novato Fire Foundation.

The 10th Annual Steven Rucker Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at StoneTree Golf Club on Sept. 9, the Novato Fire District announced.

The tournament honors the memory of Novato firefighter Rucker, who was killed in October 2003 in Julian (San Diego County) battling the 280,000-acre Cedar Fire.

“Honoring the memory of Steve and our commitment towards firefighter safety and the safety and the safety of the community is why we do things like the golf tournament,” Novato Fire Chief Mark Heine said.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Novato Fire Foundation, which funds local programs including the Fire Squirts, Holiday Toy Drive, the Holiday Giving Program and the Fire Squire program for at-risk youths.

The foundation also provides CPR training and pays for the distribution of automatic defibrillators throughout the community, Heine said.

“In a couple of instances those defibrillators have been used by members of the public to save lives,” Heine said.
