Dad/coach Denny Denhert wears silly costume at soccer jamboree much to amusement of teams, including his daughter's team, the Angry Birds.
When an under-8 girls soccer team in Novato took on the name Angry Birds at the beginning of the season, coaches Denny Denhert and Nicole Choi started to make funny references to the Internet game during practices. “All our drills have Angry Bird names,” Choi said. “Each week there is a player of the week who gets to take home a stuffed Angry Bird.” So it was natural when Halloween season came around that somebody would put on an Angry Bird costume. That person was Denhert, who bought a wacky outfit and wore it at a soccer jamboree on Saturday at Loma Verde Elementary School. The eighth-graders from St. Anthony's captured a 32-31 victory in the title game over San Domenico.
For five consecutive years, one group of young basketball players from Novato has produced perfect record after perfect record. It's believed to be unprecedented in Catholic Youth Organization team history in Marin County. St. Anthony's eighth-grade girls, many of whom have been playing hoops with each other since fourth grade, recently finished a streak of 51 league victories with a 32-31 victory over San Domenico in the county championship game at Terra Linda High in San Rafael. Alexis Herr made two pressure free throws with 2.7 seconds left to clinch the victory, and Avery Rose Knight led the team with 10 points. Yellow Jackets win in overtime to claim their division at tournament in Florida.
They are the best in the country, and no one will ever be able to take that way from them. Little do the Novato Yellow Jackets youth football team members know that they'll be bragging about this to their own grandchildren someday. Tight end Joe Kelly's touchdown catch in overtime and Jackson Wegner's conversion kick vaulted the Yellow Jackets of the Novato Youth Football Association past the Harlem Jets from New York City, 22-20, Thursday to win their division at the American Youth Football National Championships in Orlando, Fla. The championship game was in the Division II category of the Junior Midgets for players up to 13 years old and 144 pounds.
