Dad/coach Denny Denhert wears silly costume at soccer jamboree much to amusement of teams, including his daughter's team, the Angry Birds.
When an under-8 girls soccer team in Novato took on the name Angry Birds at the beginning of the season, coaches Denny Denhert and Nicole Choi started to make funny references to the Internet game during practices. “All our drills have Angry Bird names,” Choi said. “Each week there is a player of the week who gets to take home a stuffed Angry Bird.” So it was natural when Halloween season came around that somebody would put on an Angry Bird costume. That person was Denhert, who bought a wacky outfit and wore it at a soccer jamboree on Saturday at Loma Verde Elementary School. "The look on the girls’ faces — not just our girls but all the kids out there — that made it a lot of fun,” said Denhert, a plumber. “It was comparible to dressing up…

The senior is one of three Mustangs honored, joining Nicole Roberts (second team) and Sarah Lucia (honorable mention); Novato's Alison Skidmore and Rubye Fangmeyer also earn distinctions.
San Marin High senior Rachel Mehr was selected as the top goalie in Marin County Athletic League girl soccer in 2011 when the league announced the balloting for its annual awards this week. Mehr, an honorable mention pick last season, was among 12 standouts named to the All-MCAL first team. Two other Mustangs were honored. Nicole Roberts, who had made the All-MCAL first team as a sophomore in 2010, was named to the second team this season as a forward, and defender Sarah Lucia was placed on the Honorable Mention list. Novato had two honorable mention players: forward Alison Skidmore and midfielder Rubye Fangmeyer. San Marin tennis standout and Novato cross country star go out as seniors the way they began as freshmen — with first-team league honors.
San Marin High's Laura Posylkin and Novato's Courtney Madson completed grand slams in their respective sports when the Marin County Athletic League announced its all-league teams Wednesday. Posylkin was named MCAL Player of the Year in girls tennis for the third consecutive year. She also earned first-team all-league honors as a freshman in 2007. She wasn't the only Mustangs tennis player honored. Marianne Pelletier and Claire Lupatkin were selected as first-team doubles competitors, the second year in a row that Pelletier, a senior, was so honored. Madson, meanwhile, added a fourth all-league award in girls cross country to her '07, '08 and '09 distinctions. She could be handing the four-year baton to Hornets teammate Isabel Moon, who …

Under-10 team uses offense, Under-9 mates focus on defense to sweep matches in Manteca and drive home with first-place trophies in the annual soccer showcase.
(This story was updated with more details Nov. 29) Two Novato United boys soccer teams dominated the competition at the Northern California State Cup earlier this month, earning championships in the prestigious event in convincing fashion. The Novato 00 Under-10 club, coached by Sergei Chelakov, poured in nine goals in the semifinals and finals en route to the Blue-Bronze 2 Division title. Meanwhile, the Novato 01 Under-9 team, coached by Rob Neville, proved too tough for the competition defensively, surrendering just one goal in its last two matches while capturing the Red-Premier Division crown. Five other boys and girls teams represented Novato in the U9 and U10 State Cup competition, with two making the semifinals before seeing their …
