Chuxi Pan is headed first alternate for a national science camp, and Laila Smith is one of 20 kids nationwide to be named Presidential Scholar of the Arts.
Chuxi Pan and Laila Smith are among the students doing Novato High School proud — as well as our entire city. The California Department of Education announced this week that Pan has been selected as the first alternate to attend the prestigious 2012 National Youth Science Camp, a residential program that honors and challenges two graduating high school students from each state. The CDE selected four California students, two as delegates and two as alternates. The alternates serve if the delegates are unable to participate. All four students were selected because of their superior academic proficiency in math and the sciences, leadership abilities, and social maturity. Smith, a jazz singer at the Marin School of the Arts, was among 141 high…

Step your way up to help the schools this weekend and next.
This weekend is loaded with chances to help the schools, and you can even help save the planet (and your garage space) at one of the events. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, Hamilton Meadow Park School is holding a one-day free e-waste fundraiser. Novato residents and non-residents can recycle loads of household electronics, including TVs, fax machines, phones, VCRs and DVD players, toasters, vacuums, computers, radios, and so on. Remember, e-waste is considered a hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in the trash. Items can be working or not. So go through that garage of yours and bring all of those electronics down. You clear away some clutter, Hamilton makes some money, and together you go one step toward saving the …

Complaint remain steady despite that Novato City Council banned all mobile food vendors from within 1,500 feet of schools as of Feb. 9.
The Marin County Athletic League coaches selected Nick Kristofors as football's Lineman of the Year and Carlos Pechanha as soccer's Player of the Year in their annual balloting.
San Marin High’s Nick Kristofors and Novato’s Carlos Pechanha were named the best in their respective sports when the Marin County Athletic League announced its all-league teams recently. Kristofors, a senior, was voted the Lineman of the Year in football, capping a two-year run in which he dominated line play on both sides of the ball. The Mustangs standout had been a first-team All-MCAL selection on both the offensive and defensive lines last season. Pechanha, meanwhile, was selected as the Player of the Year in soccer despite Novato’s fifth-place finish. The senior was a first-team pick as a forward in 2010. Like Kristofors, Novato’s Jack MacDonald was honored in football for his play on both sides of the ball. He earned a first-team …

Girls basketball standout Darrian Cross, one of the local league's top scorers and rebounders last season at Drake High in San Anselmo, is sitting out because of her pre-existing friendship with some Hornets players.
The Marin County Athletic League’s MVS — Most Valuable Statistician — was once again on top of her game Saturday night when the Novato High girls basketball team beat Vacaville to claim third place in the Rumble in the Jungle tournament at Bethel High in Vallejo. The Hornets drove home with a 5-2 overall record in non-league play, an impressive mark when you consider some had expected their MVS at courtside to be their MVP at center court this season. Darrian Cross, an honorable mention all-leaguer last season at Drake High in San Anselmo, transferred to Novato for her senior year and had planned to join forces with a new Hornets coach, Pete Knight, and several young standouts upon which Knight hopes to build a successful hoops future. But…

Fundraiser for school program is a festive occasion on the eve of Veterans Day.
Marin County honored its veterans and helped raised funds for the Novato Unified School District at the annual Vets and Cadets Dinner at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield. It was hosted by the Building Better Citizens for America on Nov. 10, the eve of Veterans Day. Susan Miller, President of Building Better Citizens for America, hosted the event to honor Marin veterans and raise money for NUSD and the Air Force Junior ROTC program based at Novato High School. The event was highlighted by a presentation by Jonna Dooliitle Hoppes, granddaughter of famed Gen. Jimmy Doolittle and author of Calculated Risk: A Biography of American Hero General Doolittle. Doolittle Hoppes gave an inspirational speech about the heroic life of her …

A night to remember forever. There is no better feeling then that of watching the JROTC honor our Veterans, real American Heros. This night was a success. Thank you to everyone who volunteered. Thank you to all of the Veterans and your continued support for the AFJROTC. It is an honor to be a part of the AFJROTC. These cadets are our future and for that we are very fortunate.   more ›
Keep your eye out for Novato Patch's clearinghouse of school fundraisers.
Not really a cookie dough buyer? The thought of buying yet another roll of gift wrap from a kid make you feel all Grinch-like? Like the idea of helping out schools, whether you have kids enrolled or not? What if just by the simple act of, say, going out to dinner, something you happen to be doing anyway, you could donate money to a Novato school? That’s the genesis for this new feature on Novato Patch. I mentioned to Patch Editor Brent Ainsworth awhile back that it would be really cool to have all of the fundraisers put on by the various schools in a home of their own on Patch. (Let my involvement here be a lesson to all of you: if you’re going to make a suggestion, be prepared to then take it on.) Since Patch is meant to be a place for …
