It'll be Peanuts and Quackerjack at Pacifics Games

The San Rafael Pacifics baseball team recently unveiled its team mascot, a 7-foot-tall male duck called Sir Francis the Drake.

The Pacific might be a smaller pond than we originally thought, because a drake just flew in to San Rafael. A 7-foot-tall drake, who dons an Elizabethan collar and wields a sword or a baseball bat, depending on his mood. The mallard was unveiled as minor league baseball team the Pacifics new mascot on a recent morning at Parkside Children’s Center. Sir Francis the Drake is a swashbuckling, male duck based on the 16th Century Elizabethan naval commander, Sir Francis Drake. The mascot was the brainchild of Mike Shapiro, Pacifics team president and general manager, who was determined to create a mascot that was child-friendly, fun-loving and clever. “Our hope is that Sir Francis becomes synonymous with the Pacifics and with our community,” …

Father, Son Notch Holes-in-One within 5 Days of Each Other

It was a bonding experience for Frank and Tony Perachiotti.

Like father, like son. Frank Perachiotti, a lifelong Novato resident, smacked a 5-iron just right during a round of golf at Marin Country Club on May 9. The shot at the 165-yard No. 16 hole was indeed perfect, scoring him the first hole-in-one of his 35-year history on the links. But Perachiotti, a 63-year-old Bank of Marin employee, got another thrill May 14 when his son, Tony, fired an ace on the 157-yeard No. 12 hole at the famed Spyglass course in Monterey. Tony, 34 and also of Novato, works at Ghirardo CPA. Nice shots, guys.

Milestone Race for Local High School Mountain Bike Teams

Last weekend, the Norcal High School Mountain Biking Teams traveled to Marin for the first time and raced out at Stafford Lake in ninety degree heat.

Last weekend marked a milestone event the Novato and San Marin high school mountain biking clubs. It was the first time since the inception of the clubs that they were able to race on their own home turf. The clubs typically travel throughout Northern California from Monterey to Boggs Mountain for Norcal High School Mountain Bike Races, six weekends every spring. This time organizers staged races at Stafford Lake County Park just west of the Novato city limits. The local clubs have been always been united. They have traveled, raced and practiced together for years. They have shared coaches and coaching philosophies. Both of my children participated in this sport, and we participated in many unique outdoor experiences together that we will …

We're so happy that the San Marin and Novato teams have a place to race in their own backyard! It's also wonderful that the race has finally come to the county that gave birth to mountain biking. Congratulations to all the racers, no matter where they placed! We know that just finishing one of these challenging races is an outstanding achievement!   more ›

Marin Bike Coalition Amped for Bike Month

Bike to Work Day and a month-long Team Bike Challenge are part of National Bike Month to "celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride."

A quick glance at the hundreds of cyclists on the new South Novato bike path,  the trails of Tamarancho or the roads of West Marin any day of the week reveals that every month is bike month in Marin. But when National Bike Month comes around each May, the Marin County Bicycle Coalition makes sure that those who haven't yet taken to the power of the pedal have plenty of reasons to do so. The coalition has unveiled plans for 17 "Energizer Stations" for the Bay Area's 18thAnnual Bike to Work Day on May 10, with volunteers setting up along much-used bike commute routes to dole out free snacks, giveaways and encouragement. See the map of all 17 station attached at right. The coalition is also participating in the Team Bike Challenge, in which …
