The Novato Theater Company, a fixture for more than 90 years under various names, settled into a new home in 2006…More after several years of bouncing around from venue to venue, but it is hunting for a home again as of summer 2012.
And as it seeks a permanent venue, it is refering to itself as NTC to differentiate it from the effort to renovate the long-closed Novato Theater on Grant Avenue. Community theater company is unrelated to the nonprofit seeking to fix up and reopen the old movie house.
NTC spent decades putting on shows at the venerable Novato Community House (built in 1924), but it was red-tagged by a fire marshal in 2004 for not being up to code. Rendered homeless, the troupe eventually struck a temporary deal with the owners of the Pacheco Plaza shopping center in Ignacio and entered into an updated contract in 2009. As of July 2012, the company moved out of the playhouse and is seeking a new home base, even looking outside of Novato. The shows go on, however, with several planned for a temporary location in San Rafael in fall 2012.
The group, which changed its name from the Novato Community Players in 2004, puts on top-quality shows with talent from the North Bay and beyond. It has a seven-member board of directors and dozens of regular performers, sponsors and annual subscribers. Each season has at least four plays or musicals that run for several weeks at a time, and other events are regularly held at the theater.
