Novato Theater Company Looks for a New Home

Lease is set to expire on Pacheco Plaza location. Also, the Pacifics baseball team caravan makes a stop on Grant Avenue and a shred event comes to Ignacio.

The Novato Theater Company is looking for a new home as its lease at Pacheco Plaza shopping center creeps toward its June 30 expiration. The company will finish out its 2011-12 season with Noises Off and a search is on for a new space to start the 2012-13 season as planned in the fall. Pacheco Plaza management has worked with the company so it can complete all of its scheduled performances and is also renting them temporary storage and rehearsal space in the former Westamerica Bank building in the shopping center. According to Sandi Rubay-Turner, the new president of the company's board of directors, the departure from the 87-seat theater will make way for new retail next door to the Subway deli. “We’re still looking for performance space …

Governor Proposes More Cuts, Tax Hikes as State Faces New $16B Budget Gap

Figure up from $9 billion projected in January.

Gov. Jerry Brown's revised budget numbers released Saturday show that California's budget deficit is nearly $6 billion more than the governor projected in January. The New York Times reported that California now faces a $16 billion gap, up from $9 billion, in round numbers. How that'll impact cities, however, remains unclear — at least until voters weigh in at the polls in November on Brown's tax initiative. "This means that we will have to go much further, and make cuts far greater than I asked for at the beginning of the year," Brown said on Youtube, where he released his original statement. "But we can't fill a hole of this magnitude with cuts alone, without doing severe damage to our schools." "That's why I'm bypassing the gridlock, …

People will vote for taxing the wealthy at a moment's notice. What this signals is that everyone else is next. California has already one of the highest income taxes in the nation. What makes California government so expensive? When are we going to figure out that this whole state is not like silicon valley? Not everyone is going to stick around to keep on paying - certainly not to keep these …   more ›

Tick Tock: Time of My Life

She's Kicking Her Cancer, and You Can Join Her

Nicole Nada plans to arrive at her first chemotherapy session in style — after a six-day, 320-mile charity bike ride from Eureka starting on May 15.

It's already a long trip from Nicole Nada's home in Eureka to see her doctor in Greenbrae. Her next trip is going to take a lot longer. Nicole is planning to embark on a bike trip, beginning in Eureka on May 15 and ending at the Marin Cancer Institute in Greenbrae on May 21, just in time for her first round of chemotherapy. What a way to arrive. She's blogging about her journey on her site www.kickingmycancer.com. "Why the ride? Three reasons, most importantly for myself — I love to cycle and be active and it seemed like the perfect way to arrive at chemotherapy, something I am not crazy about receiving, but know I need," Nicole said. "My blood will be pumping, and I will feel healthy and strong going into it and that is important to me. …

Op-Ed: Has ABAG Become Irrelevant?

Regional association keeps displaying signs of a disconnect with the people it is supposed to represent.

A little while ago, I attended a Marin County Council of Mayors and Councilmembers meeting to listen to a presentation given by Ken Kirkey, ABAG Director of Planning. Kirkey gave an update on the One Bay Area plan and the latest Regional Housing Needs Allocation. He was supposed to answer questions that councilmembers had submitted prior to the meeting but neglected to answer many of them. Residents were also given the opportunity to ask questions. In response, Kirkey oftentimes gave rote answers that had little to do with the actual questions, stated that the question(s) were outside ABAG’s purview, or simply stated that regardless of why a community would have difficulties complying with the RHNA numbers, they would have to plan for …

Like many government agencies, ABAG was started with what were good intentions. Again, like many government agencies, it has morphed into something completely unrecognizable from it's relatively humble origins. While they are relevant to their employees, and the consultants, and developers, they are both disingenuous and dangerous to the general public. Coupled with MTC, they are simply hell bent…   more ›

Tick Tock: Time of My Life

The Continuing Price Of Being Sick

Here are some tips to shopping for medical insurance until the day free federal healthcare becomes effective.

I am the Mayor! Everyone on Foursquare probably knows someone who is "the mayor" of something. Around here, you could probably even be the Mayor of Greenbrae. That might give a smile to Larkspur Mayor Len Rifkind and his cohorts on the City Council — including Brad Marsh, who lives in Greenbrae. Being the Mayor of Larkspur … or Corte Madera … or any town is hard enough. With Foursquare, you can be the mayor of a handful of places however, as long as you check in often enough. I am the mayor of the Marin Cancer Institute on Foursquare. It seems like sort of a dubious honor, but I'll take it. I can't, however, take any credit for the success of the Institute. The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted its …

Op-Ed: We Must Protect Our Veterans from Insurance Scams

Sen. Mark Leno has introduced a bill to stop the exploitation of seniors.

The following was circulated Thursday by the office of Sen. Mark Leno, who represents the 3rd Senate District of California, which includes Marin County and portions of San Francisco and Sonoma counties. It is hard to believe that some insurance companies and agents would purposefully take advantage of older military veterans for monetary gain. Unfortunately, that is just what is occurring in community centers, nursing homes and assisted living facilities across the state when senior vets are talked into "quick overhauls" of their finances that sometimes have disastrous results. In an effort to put a stop to this exploitation of our seniors, I have authored Senate Bill 1170, which protects veterans from insurance scams. The federal …

Local Press Leads Coverage of 'Yellow Lamborghini' Case

Lamborghini thief, drive-by shooter, jealous teen: TV Movie or Major Feature?

The press is having a field day with revelations about the 17-year-old local suspect in the theft of Guy Fieri's yellow Lamborghini and a series of crimes related and incidental. Leading the charge is the Marin Independent-Journal, with several investigative articles on Max Michael Wade's past brushes with law enforcement.  Even the AP story cites the Marin IJ, even though they call Wade "the teen from tony Marin County" (see Press Democrat pick-up of the feed). Yesterday the IJ exposed some of the results of the storage shed search, including the following: Investigators also found false identification cards for California, Florida and New York, local police scanner coordinates and a full San Francisco Police Department uniform with a …

Mark, you have the right attitude. I guess it is rather hilarious. It's like, "Just because he shot at two people, head butted a kid at school stalked and harassed a girl who was not interested in him, does not make him a criminal." I guess the kid already has his followers.   more ›

Crossroads for Retailers: Ethics vs. Profit

Do you believe in boycotting or pressuring a store if it sells a product you don't believe in?

Maybe you saw the story about a group that pressured a San Rafael convenience store to yank some highly sweet alcoholic beverages known casually as alcopops off its shelves. The Novato Blue Ribbon Coalition for Youth supports such efforts and is working to make Marin an alcopop-free zone. High-octane drinks such as Four Loko, Tilt and Sparks are obviously marketed to young people and cater to Marin's reputation (justified or unjustified) as a hub of youth binge drinking. The coalition recently had a significant moral victory in another pressuring campaign against a business. The Tilly's apparel store at Vintage Oaks shopping center in Novato, which caters mostly to teens and young adults, had a window display that depicted a party …

Op-Ed: Exploring the Definition of Good Governance

City leaders are losing sight that governance lies with the people and elected representatives. At least a well-reasoned dissent to Novato's planned city administrative offices is on the record now.

The Novato Planning Commission met April 16 and April 30, successfully affirming its role in city governance and deeming the city administrative offices consistent with the city's general plan. It also concluded that the general plan includes the downtown specific plan, added as an amendment not just by mention in the specific plan document but by formal action of the council, attested to in the amendments list of the general plan. Why is this important? In the increasing complexity of our regulatory and planning environment, our city planners and managers are taking huge amounts of responsibility and initiative and in the process are losing sight that governance lies with the people and their elected representatives. On the 16th, …

Regarding affordable housing and transportation planning and funding, California Senator from Contra Costa County, Senator Mark De Saulnier, is proposing new regulations and an elected 15-member commission instead of the current JPC -Joint Powers Commission of appointed elected officials for overseeing ABAG, MTC, BAAQMD, BCDC, (Affordable Housing, Transportation and Air quality boards) The now …   more ›
