Anita Zunino, Who Fought Commercial Progress around her Old Town Home, Dies at 90

De Long Avenue resident was one of the few still living in the heart of downtown Novato.

Within a two-year span, Anita Zunino saw the Novato City Hall get renovated, had De Long Avenue reconfigured and repaved and endured the construction of the massive Millworks building all within 100 yards of her small house in Novato's Old Town area. Ernie Zunino sounded as if he were joking when he called his aunt "a mean old lady" after having to withstand all that commotion around her home on De Long, one she shared with her husband, Julius, for decades. But in a way, Ernie wasn't joking at all. "She used to be so much fun, but all that turned her into quite a pill," he said. "She wasn't the easiest one to get along with." Anita Zunino died Friday of age-related health issues, Ernie Zunino said. She was 90. A visitation is set for 4-8 p…

He was in the second graduating class of Novato High and attended the University of San Francisco before beginning his career in escrow and title insurance. Memorial Coming Up for 'Papa Jack,' Toymaker for Kids

Jack Luker was a longtime Fireman's Fund employee who turned to woodworking and giving away toys during retirement.

Dozens of local kids have hand-crafted wooden toys given to them over the years by a nice old man, a complete stranger, who didn't want anything in return. It's been more than three months since Jack Luker died at age 77 on Dec. 18, but a proper tribute for this humble toymaker is set up this Saturday at one of his favorite places, the Novato Elks Lodge.  His widow, Peggy, said "Papa Jack" wouldn't want a lavish ceremony, just something simple but nice — sort of like the toys he made for the kids. Luker, a Texan, was a flight instructor for B-25 bombers after World War II and achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force. He flew into Hamilton Air Force Base just once during his military stint, but ended up staying in Novato and …

Six years ago my son and I were walking home from Kindergarten. As my son was closing trash bins along the way, Papa Jack called us over and rewarded him with a truck. My son was so awed that he asked me as we walked away, "Was that Santa Claus!?" He had since given my children many toys and I even got a note holder. Papa Jack was a treasure to humanity.   more ›

He Was My Favorite Monkee; Who Was Yours?

Davy Jones dies at 66. Vote for your favorite Monkee here.

Multiple news media reported this morning that Davy Jones has died of a heart attack at 66, in Florida. He was my favorite Monkee, back when I was about 7 and he would have been just 21 or so. (Maybe because I was a kid, I always liked the shortest guy in the band: Ringo was my favorite Beatle.) Did you have a favorite Monkee, too? Or do you have a favorite memory of the wacky, created-for-TV rock group that left such enduring hits as "Daydream Believer"? Leave a comment below. Vote in our poll and tell us your favorite Monkee.
