The views around Novato from the 1,558-foot-high Mount Burdell are outstanding, making it a favorite with Marin County hikers. The Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve is just less than 1,600 acres and managed by the Marin County Open Space District. Hikers will pass through wide-open grasslands and dense forests of oak and bay trees on their way to the summit. Hidden Lake is a small, seasonal pond about halfway to the top and slightly to the west summit. Hikers will see rare plants, frogs, salamanders, songbirds, hawks, deer, bobcats, coyotes and occasionally a mountain lion.
