Like Pioneer Park, a half mile away, Miwok Park is popular and heavily used by the residents who live on Novato's west side. Part of the reason is the presence of the Marin Museum of the American Indian, situated in a building at the center of the park. The small museum is a destination spot for countless classes from nearby schools and a cultural gem for the city.

The parking lot on Novato Boulevard is often full, and there aren't opportunities to park along the busy thoroughfare. Nearby residential street parking is the only option on busy days.

A two-acre grassy area in front of the museum is often used for volleyball games, picnics and festivals. A canopy of trees provide shade over a relatively new playground to the side of the museum. There are courts for bocce and horseshoes, and lots of barbecue pits as well. A creek runs through the park and provides chances to observe wildlife.

The main park area, which is available for rent, only shows off a fraction of the 38 acres. The forested park stretches back into the San Marin neighborhood and has a second entry way on San Miguel Way. Residents of the nearby Parkhaven complex can take a trail to Miwok Park's main area.
