Check out what's happening in or near Novato over the next few days

On Friday, the Mayflower Chorus presents Jazz Hot and Cold, an evening of jazz at the Marin Center Showcase Theater in San Rafael. Tickets $18 general, $15 Seniors

On Saturday, enjoy a walk on Deer Island Preserve. Rising above the surrounding marshland and pastures, the mix of forest and grassland are a great place to see raptors and other birds that spend the winter here. The walk is led by a Marin County Parks ranger and will include a discussion about the native plant and animal communities. Free. Ages 15 and up.

Saturday evening, head to Las Guitarras Restaurant to catch the Holiday Comedy Showcase featuring Marvin DeLoatch Jr. & Friends.

Marvin, a Novato High School alumni, was a finalist in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition and won the Sacramento Gold Rush Comedy Competition. $15 at the door.

On Sunday, catch a performance by the College of Marin’s Music Department, performing Mass in B Minor, Bach’s last major composition, widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements of classical music.

The work is a monumental synthesis of every stylistic and technical contribution that Bach made to music. A 100-voice chorus, under the direction of Boyd Jarrell, will be joined by a full orchestra and a stellar cast of vocal soloists. On Kentfield campus. $20 general/ $15 students.
