It's In the Hole! Highlights of the Steve Rucker Golf Tourney

Novato Fire Foundation hosts the ninth annual event that celebrates the life of a fallen firefighter and raises money for great causes.

A solemn color-guard salute in honor of a fallen firefighter was followed by hours of upbeat camaraderie Monday at the ninth annual Steve Rucker Memorial Golf Tournament at StoneTree Golf Course in Novato.

The Novato Fire Foundation hosted the event, held annual in honor of Steve Rucker, a Novato Fire District engineer who was killed while battling the 2003 Cedar Fire in Southern California. He is the only firefighter in the district's history to lose his life while fighting flames.

The tournament, started in 2004, has raised more than $85,000 through the years and supported such programs as Fire Squirts camp for kids, automated defibrillator installations and a scholarship program in Rucker's name.

District firefighters Jeff Whittet and William Brody once again served as tournament co-chairs. The day of golf was followed by a banquet and fundraiser auction. It's never too late to make donations to the Novato Fire Foundation; checks can be mailed to Novato Fire District, care of William Brody, 95 Rowland Way, Novato 94945.
