Around 5K Raised at Kayla 5K Run

Organizers estimate that around $5,000 was raised at Kayla Dehnert fundraiser.

About 200 runners turned out for a Saturday benefit for Kayla Rose Dehnert, the Novato girl who has been undergoing chemotherapy at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., for the past six months.

Organizer Nicole Choi estimates that the efforts of the participants, 50 volunteers, and vendor donations resulted in about $5,000 raised for the expenses of the young girl and her family.

Choi called the event "extraordinary" with a barbecue lunch, entertainment by Kyung Ki Tae Kwon Do, magician Jay Alexander, DJ John Canaan Light and Sound and jump houses from Jubilee Jumps. Water stations were donated by Mayacamas Water.

She also thanked Harvest Market, Tony's Fine Foods, Clif Bar, Moresco Distributing, Purity Organics and Clover Stornetta for food and drink donations.

The 15 medals for run winners were donated by Marin Trophies.

Choi said she received calls the week prior to the event from people wanting to donate or volunteer. "All they cared about is giving back to a sweet Novato family who have been fighting for their daughter's life," she wrote in an e-mail.

Kayla has completed her last chemotherapy treatment, according to Choi, and is expected to return home to Novato in early August.
