How 'Bout Another Option for Capital Punishment?

A brief rant about the absurdity of executions.

I just read the article about California having to continue delaying executions.

OK, let's just say I go to Iraq and shoot an enemy soldier, and it is called a "combat death." So, I get a medal and then I come home, rob a liquor store and shoot and kill the clerk, and that is called "murder." Then, I am tried and convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection, and that is called "execution" or "capital punishment."

In reality, all three of these acts are identical: a person, a human, is being killed ... their life taken by someone else.

When I was a kid, my father used to say "do as I say, not as I do." Well, it didn't work out that way. I did whatever he did. It is the deed that teaches, not what we call it.

In the 1700s and 1800s in England, pickpocketing was a capital offense, punishable by hanging. The fact is, when someone was taken to the town square and hung and the crowd was standing there watching, pickpockets would work the crowd. Wow! What a deterent.

So, what is another option?

Go down to somewhere like southwestern Arizona, cordon off 5,000 acres of empty desert land with a 200-foot-high electrical fence. No gate, fence down 100 feet in the ground, no buildings, no kitchen, no toilets, etc., and patroll it with several helicopters. No way out. Then, if someone is convicted of murder, they are flown over the site and parachuted in, along with a tent, bedroll, a month's worth of water and food, seeds, a six pack of beer, and a Playboy magazine. That's it! No one ever hears from them again, no interviews, no visitors, nothing.

Think of the money that could be saved across the U.S. on death rows. If they survive, fine; if not, at least we have not taken someone else's life. We have not set a bad example by killing someone for killing someone.  And, I am sure most  zealots would agree, "Vengance is mine sayeth the Lord."
