San Marin STEM Marin Film Festival presents "The Physics of Sports", tonight, 6:30pm, November 6th

If you and/or your students were as impressed by the San Marin High STEM Marin (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program’s First Annual Showcase Rube Goldberg Machines (*) Project Exhibition Night as I was last month; you definitely do not want to miss STEM Marin’s First Annual Film Festival with the theme of "The Physics of Sports” this Wednesday, jointly presented with San Marin Athletics.

Just as how they worked in small groups on the Rube Goldberg Machines Project to create outrageous machines using concepts learned in school, STEM Marin students worked in groups of 4; selected a sports action as their subject matter for their film project.

The students chose various physical activities, from archery to bike jumping to running to horse barrel racing to lacrosse to free throw shooting.  They then created a 3 minute video analyzing the physics in that specific activity and used that knowledge to improve performance in the sport.

STEM Marin will be premiering a total of 15 student films.  The end goal project is to provide information which will help San Marin Sport Teams to improve and excel.

Come join us at 6:30pm, Wednesday, November 6th at San Marin High’s Emily Gate Student Center.   Admission is Free.  We would love to see you there.

STEM Marin, San Marin High School’s newly formed Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program, opened its doors to sixty ninth grade students last month. Located on the San Marin High School campus, STEM Marin offers a challenging, comprehensive, college-prep high school curriculum highlighting science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum. The program will continue to enroll sixty students each year, building to 240 total students. Project-based learning and use of technology are key instructional strategies integrated into the curriculum.  As a small learning community, STEM Marin focuses on developing strong relationships between staff, students, and parents. This makes it possible to offer personalized, hands-on, individual assistance and support to students. When students apply to STEM Marin, they are choosing to enroll in a unique educational setting and committing to high personal and academic expectations.

(*) A Rube Goldberg machine, contraption, invention, device, or apparatus is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg (1883–1970).
