Beware of Carbon Monoxide Alarm Scam Letter

Fraudulent Health and Safety Association mailer asks you to send in $126.

I wrote a post "" on June 8 about the new California State law called The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 (SB183), which requires homeowners to install carbon monoxide detector in every "dwelling unit intended for human occupancy" by July 1, 2011.

On Saturday I received a special notice from Novato Chamber of Commerce about an urgent announcement from Novato Fire Protection District warning chamber members of a mailer scam about carbon monoxide alarms.

The scam involves a fraudulent Health & Safety Association letter asking for $126 for an approved CO alarm.

I thought I should share the notice from the chamber with you:

Be aware of fraudulent Health & Safety Association letter

The California State Fire Marshal has received information that an official looking scam letter is being circulated by an organization identified as the "Health and Safety Association," of Los Angeles, Ca. The scam letter requires anyone who receives the letter to pay $126.00 to the Health and Safety Association in order to receive an approved CO alarm.  In addition, the scam letter references Senate Bill 183 and provides educational information. It goes on to say that failure to respond to this Senate Bill may result in a fine (thus leaving people with the impression that they are required to respond to this mailer within a certain time frame).

If any Novato Chamber member receive a letter such as this, disregard it.

Novato Chamber members are invited to visit the Novato Fire District website for accurate CO alarm information at the link below.
