The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise is pleased to join force with the USDA Forest Service in sponsoring a one day event for Novato’s Sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The event will be held on Saturday, April 26th, registration closes March 29. Click for the Flyer/Registration Form.
On April 26, "Day at the Forest Service Tree Nursery" participants will get a chance to work in the nursery and become part of the reforestation effort. This is the time of year when tree seeds, previously collected from locations all over the state, are removed from a freezer, thawed, and sowed by hand into containers to be germinated and grown into seedlings for planting back on the national forests as part of ecological restoration projects, usually after wildfires. Forest Service professionals will be on hand to supervise the work and to share information about national forests and about jobs and careers with the Forest Service.
The one day trip is the brainchild of, and will be led by, Rotarian Michael Landram, a retired Regional Silviculturist of the National Forest Pacific Southwest Region. Mr. Landram is the 2009 Recipient of the prestigious John R. McGuire Award for leading the effort which set historic tree planting records on the Plumas, San Bernardino and Los Padres National Forests by bringing in private sector partners, quality tree planting contractors including assistance by the National Arbor Day Foundation, National Forest Foundation and many volunteers and donations totaling $500,000.
Twenty percent of California is national forest. National forests were established in the early part of the last century. They are managed by the U.S. Forest Service, an agency in the Department of Agriculture. The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency's motto is "Caring for the Land and Serving People". The headquarters office for the region that includes California is on Mare Island. There are 18 national forests in California and over 60 offices scattered throughout the state. The agency employs over 30,000 people nationwide in a wide variety of disciplines.

- Earn 5 hours of community service credits
- Learn about summer jobs with the USDA Forest Service
- Learn about career opportunities with the USDA Forest Service
- Learn about the national forests in California (1/5th of the State!)
- Work with Forest Service employees sowing tree seeds into containers for out-planting on wildfire areas
- Tour the Forest Service Tree Nursery in Placerville
