It is hard to miss these magnificent, towering trees and their large white flowers because of the wonderful, powerful, lemony fragrance these flowers produce.
These trees are considered one of the most ancient trees because — hard to believe — they existed before bees. These hardy trees have no pollen but produce a protein that's a delicacy for beetles. In return, the beetles, not the bees, pollinate the trees and do no damage because they are deterred by the magnolia's natural defense mechanism: their waxy leaves.
