Happy Landings for 'Mission to Novato'

Veterans gather at the home of Ed and Bonnie Davis, aviation aficionados, for an annual picnic.

For almost 40 years, a couple in Novato has invited a gathering of military veterans to their house for a cozy backyard picnic in a celebration of their service to our country.

Ed and Bonnie Davis, aviation buffs of the highest order, host an invitation-only, men-only bash open to veterans and selected guests mainly just to give the guys a chance to chat among themselves in a casual setting, share memories and pay tribute to those no longer around. They call it the Mission to Novato, and more than 150 of the vets turned out Aug. 4 for this year's get-together.

Monday marks 67 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. A handful of veterans at the Mission to Novato were crew members on B-29s, the type of plane that delivered the fateful blows to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to a quick end to World War II.
