Coastal Cleanup Beautifies, Unifies

Volunteers gather for statewide cleanup effort of local waterways.

Thousands of Bay Area volunteers headed to local shorelines, beaches and inland waterways as part of the 28th annual California Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, and in a few cases the effort rolled into Sunday.

At Scottsdale Pond in Novato, Joyce Applen helped some young girls who were dedicated to keeping an accurate tally of all the things they collected. In a few hours, they picked up 738 cigarette butts, according to event organizer Susan Stompe.
