Who Are Our Favorite Marin Olympians?

Here's a list to get us started. Who else with deep Marin roots participated in the Olympic Games? What are your favorite memories about them?

While we're basking in Olympic spirit, let's pay tribute to our local Olympians.

Let's start by taking inventory.

How many Olympians have we had from Marin County through the years? We can consider those who were born here, those who grew up here or those who lived here late in life. Shoot, anybody who had a cup of coffee here could be claimed as a local, right?

We've had some ace swimmers (Ann Curtis Cuneo, Rick DeMont), some stellar sailors (Paul Cayard, John Kostecki), a sprinter (Archie Williams) and a freestyle skier (Jonny Moseley). Of those, DeMont and Moseley were the most homegrown.

That just a list to get us started. Who are we missing? What are your favorite memories of watching our locals at the Games? Share your comments below.

Three time Olympian Matt Grosjean lives in Mill Valley. He was an alpine skier who competed in '92,'94, '98. I sit right next to him at work and you'd never know it.

I have a beautiful Rick DeMont watercolor painting. I love it! He became an outstanding artist after his Olympic days. We bought a couple paintings from him when he was still here in Marin, married, and with a little baby. That was way back in the early 80's I think. I think he may live in Arizona now. Does anyone know where he is now, and if there are any local galleries that have his work?

Rick DeMont- He won the 400 freestyle, but was later striped of the gold because his coach forgot to include his prescription asthma medicine on the list of medications. Rick had taken this medicine all along, and it wasn't banned, but the officials were trying to scare the Russians. They tried to give the gold to the Australian who finished second, but I heard he wouldn't take it. Rick not crying to the public, and the Aussie refusing the medal made them both my hero.

Didn't John Kostecki grow up in Terra Linda ? , or is that not as homegrown as Novato?

Jeff " Madro" Madrigali from Ross won bronze in 1996 in yacht racing! A great sailor and coach. They just missed a medal in 2000. Stu Reilly
