Season Comes to Close for San Marin Girls Basketball Team

65-37 loss leaves Mustangs with 14-14 record, but the whole team is eligible to come back next year.

The basketball season is over for the girls, but coach Dan Lucia said the seniorless team got a lot of great experience heading into next season.

“We were very young an inexperienced going into this season,” he said Tuesday after a 65-37 loss to Analy High in the first round of the North Coast Section tournament. “We matured as a team, and we’ll be something to reckon with next year.”

Analy’s Katy Lowry and Kelly Benck each had two 3-pointers in the first half, helping the Tigers cruise on their home court to a 40-13 halftime lead. Analy (22-6) hit 10 3-pointers in all in the NCS Division III first-round game.

“They were lights out and played a really good game,” Lucia said. “They caught us on a bad night. They put great pressure on us and caused some havoc, very good man-to-man pressure. It was the same as the last time they played us only they were even better. I’m impressed at their progress over the past couple of months.”

Offensively, San Marin just misfired as Analy shot about 60 percent from the field, Lucia estimated.

“We just didn’t knock down our shots,” he said.

Nicole Roberts had a team-high 10 points for  the Mustangs, who finished the season 14-14. It’s down slightly from the 18-10 and 17-11 records Lucia’s teams have had the past few seasons, but “they never stopped playing, and I’m kind of proud of that,” he said. “It was a physical game and our girls never lied down. In fact, they probably got hungrier and hungrier as the game went on. They just kept fighting, so that’s something we’ll have to remember for next year.”
