Novato's McCoy Headed for San Diego Chargers

San Marin High grad has been serving as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator, and the Charger position would be his first NFL head coaching gig.

Novato native Mike McCoy was introduced Tuesday as head coach of the NFL's San Diego Chargers.

"Without a doubt, we knew this was the place we wanted to be," McCoy told ESPN about his family's reaction to the move.

McCoy, a 1991 San Marin High School graduate, signed a four-year contract to take over the AFC West team. McCoy helped lead the Denver Broncos to the AFC Divisional Playoffs last weekend as the team's offensive coordinator. The squad lost to the Baltimore Ravens, ending Denver's season with a 13-3 record.

McCoy, 40, played quarterback at Long Beach State and the University of Utah and played several seasons in the NFL as a backup QB. He started coaching in the NFL in 2000 with the Carolina Panthers and has steadily risen through the ranks.

Here's a story from the San Diego Union Tribune about McCoy's hiring, and here's a Union Trib column about how McCoy will have to learn how to delegate to coaches working under him. In the Denver Post, there's a story about how the Broncos and QB Peyton Manning will have to deal without McCoy's offensive guidance.

Anybody in Novato have congratuatory words for McCoy and his family? Add a comment below.

Great news for the McCoy family. I remember when he was playing at San Marin and I was writing for the Marin IJ. He was an outstanding young man and now he has gone to new heights. Congratulations, Mike.
