The San Rafael City Council unanimously approved Centerfield Partners'  proposal for a minor league team Sept. 19 despite arguments by neighbors about noise. The Dublin-based group plans to field a team at the 700-seat, 60-year-old stadium and compete in the independent North American League for the 2012 season. The city is expected to make $20,000 from the deal.

According to the league's website, the skill level is considered Double-A to Triple-A and the alumni of the three founding leagues (Golden, Northern, United) have seen more than 40 players reach the major leagues with 35 more signing  contracts with MLB organizations in 2010. The closest team to San Rafael is the Chico Outlaws, but most other teams in the league's northern division are in western Canada. A southern division has teams in Texas and Arizona.
