Driscoll Now Set to Go in NCS Baseball Finals

San Marin ace would have been limited to three innings had the showdown with Acalanes been Saturday, but the rain postponement gives him a chance to pitch a complete game Tuesday.

Like everyone else associated with the baseball program, coach was looking forward to the North Coast Section Division 3 championship game Saturday at St. Mary's College in Moraga.

But when the game got rained out, postponed until Tuesday at 5 p.m. at San Marin High, nobody minded less than the veteran coach.

The delay gives the top-seeded Mustangs two distinct advantages when they host Acalanes of Lafeyette on Tuesday.

First off, San Marin gets to play at home, as opposed to a St. Mary's College field that's located about a 10-minute drive from the Acalanes campus. The Mustangs already have won twice at home in this tournament.

And secondly, it allows Mustangs ace to pitch a full game.

Driscoll did exactly that last Tuesday when the Mustangs, in another game that had been rain-delayed, beat Moreau Catholic of Hayward in the second round of the tournament. He limited the potent Mariners to one run in a 3-1 victory.

Driscoll, however, would have been limited to just three innings had the game been played Saturday because CIF rules limit pitchers to 10 innings in one calendar week. So Whitburn had planned to use as many as three pitchers in Saturday's finale.

But now that the game has been moved to a new week, the slate is wiped clean for all pitchers.

The Mustangs are going after the fifth NCS baseball title in school history.
