An Amazing Story of iPad Survival (Turns Out They Can Fly!)

Setting your iPad on the roof of your car usually doesn't end well, but alert people help create a happy ending.

Usually if you start a story with "I left my iPad on the roof of the car," it does not end well. So that's why I wanted to share what happened this week to my friend and business partner, Kevin McGinnis.

He's a talented guy, a great Realtor, and it turns out he's pretty lucky too. Read for yourself what he posted on his Facebook page yesterday...

"I left an open house in Petaluma on Sunday, headed for home.  As I was loading my car, I carelessly placed my iPad on the roof.  Of course, you know what happens next:  I forgot about it and drove away.

Once I was about 10 miles down Highway 101, I realized what I had done and I pulled over.  Nothing.  I retraced my steps, but found no sign of it anywhere.

So today I got a call from the Novato Police Dept. asking if I was missing an iPad.  When I said yes, the officer asked me how I happened to have lost it.  I told her and she said that a homeless man riding his bicycle on the side of the highway found it, and was using it at one of the Novato Starbucks.

Either the patrons or the Starbucks employees became suspicious and wondered why or how a homeless man would come to own an iPad.  Someone called the police, they tracked me down, and now I have it back!  I gave the homeless guy a $60 reward and everyone was happy.

Today is my lucky day so I'm off to buy a lottery ticket."

Kevin tells me the iPad works perfectly, there isn't even a scratch. The soft case it was in has a small bump/tear where it hit the ground, but that's it! The iPad traveled 2 miles on the roof of his SUV through town, then flew off as he got on the freeway.

How amazing that it landed unscathed and on the side of the road versus in the lane where it would've been roadkill ...  and that a guy found it ... rode to Novato ...  and that alert people called the police!

Kevin had changed his email password, but the officer was still able to see enough of his emails to know who it belonged to.

What luck, don't you think? I wonder if anyone else has a good lost-and-found story?
