Transfer Request Deadline is Tuesday for Middle Schoolers Seeking to Move to a Different Campus

Impending closure of Hill Middle School has placed a rush on intradistrict transfer requests.

Families seeking transfers to other public schools in Novato for next fall have a Tuesday deadline to get their paperwork turned in. The decided on a March 22 deadline for such transfers at a special meeting on March 12 and Superintendent Jan La-Torre Derby focused on the subject in the April Newsletter send out Friday morning (see attached), prompting many schools to send out e-newsletter blasts.

Middle school drawing last week by the NUSD Board of Trustees about two months after deciding to close Hill Middle School at the end of this school year. The middle school site on Diablo Avenue will be transformed into an alternative education center and all sixth-, seventh- and eight-graders will be sent to the other two intermediate schools, Sinaloa and San Jose.

Students who were slated to attend Hill this fall will receive top priority from the district on transfer requests based on a recent vote by the trustees. All transfer requests will be handled at the school district office, a change in policy from before when the two schools affected would handle it.

Sinaloa, the traditional feeder school from elementaries on the west side of town, and San Jose, the feeder school from those on the south side, are having special tours Monday for parents who might be on the fence about filing transfer requests. Sinaloa’s tour starts at 9 a.m. and San Jose’s will follow at 10:30 a.m.

The schools ask that parents call ahead of time to reserve a tour spot. Sinaloa is at 897-2111 and San Jose is 883-7831.

The district said those who submitted intradistrict transfer requests and are now within the area of the requested school do not need to submit a written request.
