Traffic Alert: Public Schools Start Wednesday

Local streets will be stocked with moms and dads taking their kids to campuses all over town.

Expect some gridlock on Novato streets Wednesday morning. It’s the first day of school at campuses.

For parents driving kids to school, it's the start of a recurring logistical nightmare and fond recollections for the time when our state could afford buses.

For people who don't have kids but have to get places, you still risk getting caught in the frenzy if you fail to factor in the school schedules.

Check out the attached list of start and end times for each elementary, middle and high school in Novato. It’s virtually guaranteed that you can expect a slowdown for about 20 minutes before and 10 minutes after school starts at each campus.

Although afternoon pickup time doesn’t fall in the realm of rush hour, it can be just as troublesome for traffic because parents often show up early and then linger later as they talk to friends or teachers.

How to avoid the headache, aside from aspirin and patience? For kids and parents, strongly consider walking to school or riding bikes. It takes more time, but it promotes health and fitness and creates a bonding opportunity. Ask about the Safe Routes to School program at your school office.

Drivers who do not have kids in school should consider adjusting their routes to avoid the school zones, especially during morning dropoff times.

While we’re thinking about the start of school, consider taking a few minutes to thank the crossing guards, custodians, teachers and administrators for all the work they’ve done to get ready for the start of the school year. It’s always a monumental effort.
