Teachers Leaflet District Schools This Morning

Teachers at Hamilton Meadowpark Elementary took part in a district-wide leaflet campaign to give info on why the teachers union has reached an impasse in salary contract negotiations with the Novato Unified School District.

This morning teachers from the Novato Federation of Teachers took part in a leafleting campaign as parents and students arrived for school.

The half-sheet leaflet gave bullet points on why the NFT has reached an impasse in negotiations with the Novato Unified School District.

Titled, "A Commitment to Fairness," the leaflet stated:

Ultimately, in order to avoid impasse, all that NFT asked from the District was:

  • A commitment to a time line for teachers reaching the average total compensation of our comparable districts.
  • A commitment to two board members to participate in the interest-based bargaining process.
  • An explanation of how NUSD reserves will be allocated.
  • A commitment to have a study of comparable districts completed by the end of this school year.
No money, just a commitment to be fair to Novato teachers. And they couldn't even do that.

On the back of the leaflet are the names and email address of the school board members along with school board meeting times. The leaflet prompts readers to, "Ask your school board representatives why they won't fairly compensate Novato teachers."

This week the NFT announced the plans to leaflet after they determined that they would be filing official papers with the state to declare an impasse. Filing is the first step in a process that would then require fact-finding and an arbitration.

The union has been in negotiation with the district since the existing contract expired in 2009.
