Surprise Song for 'Our Guy,' San Jose Middle School Principal Jeff King

About 200 students, parents and faculty surprise principal with a special honor.

Jeff King, a long-time administrator, consultant and co-author of a book titled  “TurnAround Schools: Creating Cultures of Universal Achievement,” emerged from retirement in 2009 for a temporary assignment as principal at San Jose Middle School in Novato. He didn't want to leave his home in San Diego, so he commuted by plane.

Wednesday night was a night of celebration for the well-liked Super Commuter, who is leaving the district at the end of the school year in a few weeks.  Approximately 200 people enjoyed dinner, a lively concert, ribbon-cutting ceremony for the computer lab and a personalized version of “My Guy,” a song written especially for King by San Jose’s instrumental music teacher, Benedetta  Dalbesio, and it was performed by the school band.

During King's 2 1/2 years at San Jose, supporters say he empowered the teachers and engaged students to reach their potential and change the culture of the school in such a short period of time.

"The whole journey has been amazing. The change in culture has been remarkable," said Catherine Pace, San Jose’s PTA president. ”He believes that everyone has the ability to succeed if they are given the tools.  He has high expectations and the teachers and students have risen to this.”

San Jose now boasts that it is home of Novato’s hardest-working students. King coached teachers on how to challenge students differently and establish techniques to reach each student. With the No Excuses College Prep Program, students were encouraged to wear university attire and taught that they each have the ability to attend college.

King said Wednesday that he has three wishes for his students: to work hard, be nice and go to college. What are his plans for the future? You will find him pedaling down the Oregon coast with his wife this summer. After his trip, he will be trading those commuter flights for an 11-mile commute he will enjoy on his bicycle to Mission Middle School in Escondido.
