In 2003, a small group of Novato community members formed a group to fund school programs that would otherwise be lost because of budget cuts.
Ten years and over $1.7 million later, School Fuel, the Novato
Foundation for Public Education, has funded programs that benefit the more than
8,000 students in NUSD including:
- music teachers in local elementary schools
- technology training for teachers
- physical education programs
- career counselors
- art, drama and architecture classes.
Today, School Fuel continues to support Novato students by providing funding, encouraging community engagement, and advocating for student needs. On November 16, School Fuel will host its “10th Anniversary Celebration” at the Margaret Todd Senior Center, 1560 Hill Road in Novato.
The event will feature food, a look back at 10 years of Novato student achievements and School Fuel’s vision for the future.
“School Fuel’s 10th Anniversary Event is a chance for our supporters to see how their donations have helped to form stronger schools, and in turn a stronger community,” said Kathryn Hansen, board president.
School Fuel engages the community by providing volunteer and educational opportunities outside of the classroom, forums to showcase students’ talents, like the Tour of Novato and ArtSmart, and events to help inform parents such as Novato School Board candidate forums and expert-led discussion sessions.
Since the beginning, School Fuel’s philosophy has been that engaging students encourages them to become responsible community members and more enthusiastic learners.
“School Fuel has worked for a decade to enrich the education of every student in Novato,” said Susan Mathews, volunteer executive director and one of the founding board members of School Fuel.
“We have been honored to work with the Novato community for 10 years and we look forward to continuing our mission to support Novato students for years to come.”
Tickets for the adults-only 10th Anniversary Event are available for $35 a person and include two adult beverages. All proceeds will help fund another decade of enrichment for Novato students.
