School District Copes with $2.3 Million in Cuts

Superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby sends budget update to community about challenges ahead.

The , which is starting to implement more than $2.3 million in cuts recently approved by its board of trustees, has distributed a budget update to parents on the uncertain economic times ahead.

In an ominous letter written by Superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby, the district lays out the situation with the state budget in flux and what that will mean to local classrooms.

"If the Legislature fails to reach agreement on the parameters of a measure for a June vote, the Legislature will need to immediately begin to plan for an 'all cuts' budget," La Torre-Derby wrote. "... As our community jointly addresses the state budget deficit consequences, we must do so with strategic thinking, planning, and courageous leadership by all constituents in order to preserve the integrity of the public school system.  The common goal is to restore local control.
