New Charter School on School Board's Agenda

Superintendent plans to address a proposal by the North Bay Educational Foundation at the Tuesday board meeting.

Novato's superintendent of public schools on Tuesday will address a tentatively planned for the 2013-14 academic year.

Shalee Cunningham is scheduled to speak at the board of trustees meeting about the North Bay Educational Foundation and its bid to open a charter school based on the Core Knowledge system of learning. The foundation has held s to gauge public support for the effort.

Momentum is slowly gaining for a kindergarten-through-eighth grade public charter school that would serve as an alternative to options available now, according to the foundation's organizers. The curriculum would follow the Core Knowledge model similar to more than 700 other schools in the country, and provide a much different educational path than the 's Waldorf-based strategy.

Core Knowledge, created by a former university professor, is a methodology that mixes educational lessons — math with history, history with science, science with social studies — and has a track record of improving standardized test results.

Also on Tuesday's agenda are a financial update and the results of a transportation study.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the district office.

Brent, I agree with Tanya. The dialogue would be so much more constructive if everyone had to use their real name and have only one account so that trolling was more difficult to accomplish.

Guess you only feel safe when you cower behind a pseudonym. You have a problem with my opinion and my free speech rights then you can find me in the phone book. But I only attack cowardly trolls who validate themselves by demeaning those who do not agree with them. Hiding your identity only shows that you lack the integrity to stand up for the values you espouse. Besides, this is a community board. Not using a real name only shows that you are ashamed of what people who know you would feel about what you write.

I was not referring to you Right but the guy who never has anything to say but to blame my pension for all the world's issues and call anyone who has an opinion differing from his a troll.

Right - are you also vehemently opposed to the Waldorf-based charter school near Hamilton? That has been there for years and seems to be running smoothly for families who favor that type of cirriculum/learning method for their children. Have you tried to shut that down? Honestly, just curious. I think people forget Novato has one charter school already. Is it harming or hurting education in Novato?
