Moms Talk: Can I Get an Allowance?

A local mom ponders the give-and-take in giving her daughter an allowance. What do you think?

Welcome to Moms Talk, a new feature on Novato Patch in which we invite you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support for Novato moms and their families. Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the families who make up our community will have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians, 24-hour pharmacies and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

Grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with this week's question. Provide answers below in the Comments box, and submit your own questions to me directly at brent.ainsworth@patch.com.

Q: My daughter is six years old and definitely grasps the concepts of money, work, and responsibility. At what age should we introduce an allowance? How do we determine the right amount? Does she have to earn it, and if yes, what kind of chores should we assign? If she fails to do her chores, do we withhold it?
