Kids Lured Into Environmental Awareness

A fishing program allows local children to appreciate their surroundings.

For years. the Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise has sponsored the California Department of Fish & Game’s Fishing in the City program each spring and fall at Novato’s Scottsdale Pond.

The next event takes place April 27 from 8 a.m. to noon.

“It is a family oriented outdoor program which brings families together at the pond to teach fishing techniques and to help educate kids about conservation of natural outdoor resources,” said Rotarian Cherie Ross. “Kids get to use fishing rods provided by the city and receive their very own tackle boxes complete with weights and hooks and instruction on how to use them.”

The pond will be stocked with hundreds of pounds of catfish and fishing equipment is provided free of charge to participants. The event is best geared toward fourth to eighth grade students but all are welcome.

“Worms are also provided,” Ross added. “Then, on to casting instruction so the hooks get out on the water where the fish are. It is a fun time for all with hot dogs and chips to top off the fishing experience. Everything but the poles are sponsored by our club.”

Each participant moves from station to station learning something new along the way. By the time all stations are completed, the participants have a rigged fishing rod, a small tackle box and a better understanding of their environmental surroundings. Participants get to keep the tackle box and a free hotdog lunch was provided afterwards. Fishing rods are returned at the end of the event.
