Homeward Bound & Slow Food Join in Garden Celebration

Homeward Bound of Marin, in concert with Slow Food Marin-Petaluma, will celebrate the opening of a new edible landscape garden in Novato from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Slow Food Marin-Petaluma will co-host a chef demonstration at the event as part of the Slow Food USA $5 Challenge, offering a garden-to-table meal showcasing ingredients grown on site that make tasty fresh food available to any budget.

The event will begin with a dedication of the garden named for Bob Tanem, a longtime garden volunteer for Homeward Bound and host of “Bob Tanem in the Garden” on  KSFO-AM radio, and the late Marion Greene of San Rafael, whose LEF Foundation provided funding for the project.

The Tanem Greene garden replaces a grass courtyard at New Beginnings Center, a transitional housing program for 80 homeless adults, with cultivated beds and containers growing berries, lettuce, vegetables and fruit trees. The center is at 1399 N. Hamilton Parkway in the Hamilton neighborhood.

Ingredients from the garden will star in a chef demonstration at 5 p.m. by Homeward Bound Chefs Luis Realpozo and Rocky Packard. Slow Food Marin-Petaluma will offer recipes and information about incorporating fresh ingredients in economical daily meals.

A donation of $5 per plate is suggested; all proceeds support shelter and job-training programs at Homeward Bound of Marin.

Homeward Bound of Marin, founded in 1974, is the county’s chief provider of shelter and services for homeless families and adults. For more information, please visit online at www.hbofm.org.
