Congressman Huffman to Visit Loma Verde's Lunch Program

The district estimates it has reduced children's sugar intake by 400 pounds a day

Congressman Jared Huffman will visit Loma Verde Elementary School this Friday, dropping in on the school’s lunch program.

The Novato Unified School District has worked hard over the past decade to eliminate highly processed food and items with a high sugar content such as chocolate milk, juice and soda, according to Miguel Villarreal, director of food and nutrition services.

“We know and many studies have shown the negative impacts sugary foods have on kids,” Villarreal said. He said the district has eliminated 400 pounds of sugar a day from cafeteria meals, the equivalent of about 30 tons each year.

Last year, the city also passed a ban of ice cream trucks vending outside schools, a move Villarreal said was a major victory for the district.

The district serves around 4,500 meals a day.
