Documentary and Discussion Take Aim at Prescription Drug Abuse

The Novato Unified School District will screen a documentary about the prevalence of prescription abuse among teens and hold a discussion panel on the topic on Wednesday, November 20.

Behind the Orange Curtain is a documentary created by Newport Academy, a teen substance abuse treatment center in Orange County, to bring to light the epidemic of prescription drug use among teens. Experts working in the field of substance abuse will also be present and provide parents and students with information about how to spot signs of abuse and how to intervene.

The presentation will take place at San Marin High School in the Emily Gates Student Center. The evening begins at 5:30 pm with a Welcome Reception followed by the screening at 6pm.

The event is one of numerous educational and preventive measures NUSD has taken to educate parents about the  dangers of prescription drug abuse.  The district also provides an alcohol and drug counselor who works at each of the middle and high school sites and runs evidence based groups, individual counseling and support, and education opportunities to students identified as high risk by staff, teachers, administration, or parents.
