Back to School Nightmare: Lice

Back to school can be full of fun, but it is also full of cooties.

School means contact. Contact means sharing. And sharing isn’t just about toys.

Children don’t have to be reminded to share when it comes to cooties, colds and flus. No parent is happy about sharing when it comes to discovering your child has head lice.

Like chicken pox, head lice is something almost every child goes through. Babble has seven tips to treating head lice, including the pros and cons of each, from all natural shampoos to professional exterminations.

So, Novato parents, do you have advice for the first-timers? What did you find worked best to rid your child of the little cooties? What didn’t? Any horror stories? How often do you check for lice? Tell us in the comments.

Robi-comb. You comb through dry hair and it zaps and kills the adult bugs.

I'd like to know how many people were able to read this article and NOT itch their scalp. Thanks a bunch, "Patch staff."

You're welcome! FYI to our readers, a Patch staff byline just means I stole it and tweaked it from another Patch site that used the same byline.

Unfortunately, this article - and some comments shared by readers - perpetuate numerous myths about lice, the frequency with which kids are infested, the means by which they're shared, and the ways to battle them. It would be wise to review the policy statements by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses, and the CDC. Links to these sites, as well as updated educational guidance on the biology and management of head lice, can be found at https://identify.us.com, the new site for information I formerly hosted at Harvard for many years.

Yup... Lori is right! One of my kiddos got lice from band camp and we did exactly as she mentioned above. I figured since one kid got it, he could have exposed my other kid and also to me since I am always loving and huggin on them. I thought I would nip it immediately and not be the family that is plagued with re-infestation... Soooo, the boys and I all had lathered on mayonnaise heads wrapped in plastic bags for several hours. Then we rinsed and washed up, cleaned all bedding, put stuffies in plasic bags and we were done with it. I did, however do a second round on all of us 14 days later just to be sure we got any unhatched nits. Definitely a safer way to go rather than exposing them to the pestacide treatments/shampoos that are on the market!
