Who Won the VP Debate?

Tell us who you think won the vice presidential debate: Paul Ryan or Joe Biden?

Though vice presidential debates historically have not weighed heavily on Americans’ voting decisions, tens of millions tuned in to Thursday night's debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan.

After the first presidential debate in which many deemed Gov. Mitt Romney the victor over President Barack Obama, the stakes were high tonight in Danville, KY, as each candidate tried to bolster their respective presidential candidates. Before the debate, pundits said that Joe Biden shouldered the responsibility of rebounding the Democratic ticket from Obama’s “lackluster” performance. Paul Ryan, they said, had to carry the momentum of Romney’s performance in Denver and further paint the Obama administration as ineffectual.

Going into the match, a new Pew poll said Joe Biden was viewed favorably by 39 percent surveyed in contrast to 44 percent who viewed Paul Ryan favorably. However, Ryan was quick to point out that Biden is a strong debater, having won several primary debates back in 2008 when Biden ran for president.

Tonight’s debate topic — domestic policy — had both men talking everything from social issues to war.

The Gloves Are Off

Ryan came out of the gates swinging after Moderator Martha Raddatz asked each candidate about the Obama administration’s response to the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11 that killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

Ryan accursed the Obama administration of “making us less safe” and calling it an “unraveling” of foreign policy. Biden immediately called this statement “malarkey.”

Abortion

Raddatz proceeded to touch on some controversial issues, including abortion, and directly mentioning both candidates’ Catholic faith. Both aligned with their churches, believing that life begins at conception. However, both disagreed on policy with Ryan stating that the Republican ticket opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest, while Biden said he would not want to impose his personal beliefs on anyone.

War

A potential war in Syria and the current war in Afghanistan took hold of the debate next. Biden firmly stated that he would not want to start another war in the Middle East despite reportings of human rights abuses. Ryan was critical of the Obama administration’s handling of the situation, but Biden then accused Ryan of not offering a specific alternative.

Both candidates agreed that pulling the troops out of Afghanistan by 2014 was an appropriate and realistic timeline, although Ryan was critical of broadcasting the U.S.’s plans to the enemy.

Taxes

Biden stuck by the mantra that there will be tax cuts for the middle class while the Bush tax cuts would expire and those earning $1 million of income will pay more taxes. Ryan stated that under a Romney Administration, there would be a 20 percent across-the-board tax cut. He acknowledged that there would be an increase in defense spending but a cut in soldiers to reduce the Navy.

Biden also brought up the viral video of Romney at a May fundraiser calling the 47 percent of Americans who pay no federal income taxes “victims.” He noted that no administration should sign off on almost half of the nation.

But Ryan used statistics to point out an economy that still needed much mending: 23 million unemployed and 15 percent of the nation in poverty.

So tell us in the comments ... Who gave the better debate performance?

If you're going to call me a moron, would you please have the decency to take on at least one of my arguments? So far, no one has.
Amanda Montgomery October 15, 2012 at 06:09 PM
I have disdain for people who think they sit on moral high ground because of their version of religion. Tax and spend is tired, and false - spend and spend is how GWB took us from surplus to defecit. Blame America first is also tired, and false - but the stubborn refusal to admit, EVER that America may have made a mistake somewhere, is absurd. And don't even think of assuming you know more about the Constitution of the United States of America than I do. You don't know a thing about me. I'm trying to engage in a rational discussion with those with whom I disagree, and you have contributed nothing but cliches and blind rage. If you have a point to make, I ask that you please do so, and please attempt to be civil.
Amanda Montgomery October 15, 2012 at 06:14 PM
Obama 2016 is as much a "documentary" as a Michael Moore movie, and I'm as likely to see the one as the other (that is, not at all). Both men start out with a statement and cherry pick facts to support it - that's not "documentary" that's "propaganda," and it is far more harmful than helpful. I've read about the documentary, and the arguments put forth, both from the perspective of someone in support of what is said, and against, and it seems to me that the movie is riddled with wild accusations and inaccuracies. Here's one of many articles taking on the facts within and calling into question its veracity: http://ivn.us/2012/08/31/fact-check-of-2016-movie-obamas-america-by-dinesh-dsouza/

There is nothing to do with race in this election. It is not racist to dislike the president. He happens to be black, and that is irrelevant. If you think Biden was rude and arrogant, then can you imagine how much more arrogant his "boss" is?

I hope you all vote. This is going to be an election with a huge impact on our future. Right wing nutters and left wing nutters and all in between need to turn out.

ATTACKING is a strong word Mary. I am not on here for that,,, but standing up to radicalism, Socialism, Communism, ACLUism, Black Muslism, Farakahnism, Rev.Jeramia Rightism, who GD's America from his pulpit where Obama attended, is VERY important. I believe it has been our complacency that has us in this mess in many ways. WE laid back, accepted that we were such a "racist" nation, when we were not, such bad American's for stepping in to defend people who's sex part were cut off literally for "religious" reason's in other countries? off women, child labor, China's taking us over by selling us so much that we can produce right here at home on our land, fairly and squarely hire our people. The "Flower Child " movement was in my day, I am a baby boomer generation, watched it affect our whole state and country. Saw how the homosexuals went from our civil treatment, love and forgive and forget? to them DEMANDING THEIR RIGHTS and stomping all over our Nations laws! jane

I agree with you , I do think we need constructive criticism at times to learn from . I for one love all people, and so did my parents.I am part Spanish, here legally, Scotch, Irish, English, Penn-Dutch (German), French, Italian, Norwegian and Finn, and we think Jewish also as one grandpa was named Reuben Golden and his brother also had a Jewish name. WE LOVE ALL PEOPLE. I have a very mixed family. I am not a hippy and never was,got married way too young and settled down. I am quite analytic also, and talk with people every where I go.I just had a nurse ask, who are you voting for?,she is from AFRICA and said she does not want Obama, her country is full of wars and unrest.I repeat, she was against Liberal ' Obama! I want our laws to be effective and good, fair and yet strong. I want the illegal's to stop coming for now,,, this has burdened our system so much. I hope they can go back and build on their own system for their "dream". WE are a melting pot,,, but they should learn our language for example if they plan to live here. I do not think we should have to push #1. for English, why not push # 1. for Spanish? We have given and given, now they are taking over and many are STILL resentful and want USA to be the one to Change???????????? jane
Jane Gray October 21, 2012 at 08:19 PM
Whirly, Oh please,,,,,,,,,,,you are the radical one. This is an open forum of idea's, and you have had that open forum to use also. You then try to send us to an anti Republican/drags down Romeny? I really do not agree,,,,,, but will go see what is up on that site. Who write's it? sfgate is very LIBERAL news! jane
Jane Gray October 21, 2012 at 08:29 PM
there it is Whirly "gig". I can see the errors and slants right off the bat,in this one man's opinion!!,,,, (Romney is not dropping, he is coming up in polls!!) He even- politely -during a "debate" turned to Obama and began to educate our president! Obama just stood there and even said yes at times!! Romney is far smarter and more educated, did Missions with his church to help people in need, while Obama led the street radicals with his time, and fratinized with the likes of Rev. Wright!! who hates America. Black Radicals talk that talk! There are two major theories about why Mitt Romney is dropping in the polls. One is that Romney is a lousy candidate (SAYS WHO? THIS RADICAL "STORY" TELLER!!), unable to connect with people or make his case. ( nOW THAT'S A BIG JOKE AND UNTRUE), The other is that Americans are finally beginning to see how radical the GOP has become and are repudiating it. wHIRLY, I CAN SURE SEE WHERE YOUR COMING FROM. I KNOW SFGATE, HAVE BEEN INTERVIEWED MANY TIMES BY THEM TO "CLEAR" A MESSAGE. TAKE A LONG LOOK AT FOX NEWS SOME NIGHT FOR ME. JANE
Jane Gray October 21, 2012 at 08:38 PM
Dave, Hate to tell you publically, but your neurotic and think negatively most of the time,,,,, radical reading can do that, plus who you listen to. Get some counciling for your thinking, but go to someone with faith, not some "rock hugging Liberal" kook please, I am serious, Marin is full of too many left over love children with a refer in their hand for brkfst! POT is not good for you, SMOKE in your lungs is NEVER GOOD FOR YOU,,,,, the POT Dealers are not paying taxes as JUST ONE of the "reason's" they gained the despensories,( it will help the economy to legalize it? NOT) it is NOT GOOD FOR THE BRAIN! Fresh Air is. --- walking is so important for elders especially. jane

EWC, thank you for your comment ,,, jane
Jane Gray October 22, 2012 at 03:48 PM
We are not talking about Richard Nixon, or John Kennedy, I do not recall them, from long past,,,,,,,you seem to be deeply angry, you bash away, just go vote your choice, we do not believe all your hype Dave the prag. Sincerely, jane
Jane Gray October 22, 2012 at 03:52 PM
No one forced you to read this, your rude and your insulting just like those you plan to vote for, good choice for YOU. No one is pushing their religion down your throat, but I do have just as much freedom of speech as you do fella! Go Romney and Ryan,,,,,,,we need good LEADERSHIP for all, not just radicals
Jane Gray October 22, 2012 at 04:08 PM
If Someone is a true Christian, they don't just "play act" when your looking, it is in their heart. These two men are of different faiths, just as Sandorum is Christian, Ryan is a Catholic, and Romney a mormon. I think it shows that ALL can work together. FAITH," Religion", HOPE, Reborn, go seek to find out what they mean. A belief that guides you all your days, and nights, it is not some faucet, that you shut off and on. Thank God for that. Even Billy Graham and his son are urging all to vote R and R,,they are just as concerned about the direction Obama has led us to???,,,Billy has been council to many presidents or been their spiritual adviser. We do not want SATAN to rule our leader's or our nation, we like having people with morals and convictions in office of high places. You have tons of country's to go to for radical leaders who practice no faith at all, they rule with a Gun to your head! Make you kill girl babies, limit children, let their people starve,,,,enslave people to long work hours,,,,,freedom? not, the kind I want but you can choose for yourself. Vote Romney Ryan come Nov.6 th Sincerely, jane

Why not attack the way our country has gone down hill from all of Obama's quicky moves to set in motion the NEW WORLD ORDER,,,,,,,Socialism is only the beginning,,,, I pray that all the normal people come out in droves to vote him out, with his smerk buddy Biden,,,,,,,we as American's deserve so much better. No more sex in our oval office with a young girl, no more radical belief's pushed on the American people,,,,,,,,,, jane

OBAMA: "What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East." THE FACTS: Obama was suggesting that he had never favored keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the December 2011 withdrawal deadline that the Bush administration had negotiated with the Iraqi government. Actually, the Obama administration tried for many months to win Iraqi agreement to keeping several thousand American troops there beyond 2011 to continue training and advising the Iraqi armed forces. The talks broke down over a disagreement on legal immunity for U.S. troops. FOLKS. I about choked on Obama telling us we are now stronger??? since he has been in office?? PS, Whirly gig, I guess you do not really support freedom of speech, you hurl insults instead of staying on subject, who won, and who will win and why. Whirly, your very welcome, jane
Jane Gray October 23, 2012 at 04:39 AM
I have had interest in the Middle East war's, I have two in the military that I raised. One is now retired. Then two patriotic grandsons went in after the Aunt and Uncle were in, we all do not favor war, but we do favor a VERY strong military. The one grandson wrecked his back over in Iraq, but does not complain of going, he signed up for a reason, we are definatly a patriotic family. We for the most part are Christians, faith that walks, and do not push it on others. We believe in the HOLY bible, God's word as Truth. I am very proud of my family. My sister and her husband were also in the Air Force, and favor less govt. He was a state legislator three terms in their state, we keep each other informed. He went to VN, and came home a LT Col. they are still very active in groups in Colorado at ages 75 and 80. jane, I truly appreciate our military.

"STRONGER NOW THAN WHEN I CAME INTO OFFICE"? MITT ROMNEY PRESS | 22 OCTOBER, 2012 - 22:58 Location Boston, MA United States Despite President Obama’s Rhetoric, America Is Weaker Than When He Took Office President Obama Claims That America Is “Stronger Now Than When I Came Into Office”: President Obama: “America remains the one indispensible nation. And the world needs a strong America and it is stronger now than when I came into office.” (President Barack Obama, Presidential Debate, Boca Raton, FL, 10/22/12) But President Obama’s Defense Cuts Will Weaken Our National Security And Be “Devastating” To Our Military: From Jane Gray: It stands to reason, if we have the strongest army backing us here in America, we will be strong again, our enemies will not view us as pushovers. Those who flipped off the past presidents portraits inside OUR White House, I have that picture, will take notice, not to do such ever again, and Mitt will not put up with that vulgar behavior. jane
