What is Novato's Pothole Scorecard?

It's among the best in Marin County and getting better each year, according to the a report from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Novato received one of the best grades among Marin County municipalities recently when the Metropolitan Transportation Commission released its report on the state of Bay Area roads.

It shouldn’t be a surprise because it’s the fourth consecutive report in which Novato has improved.

The new report (attached) was based on analysis of pavement conditions conducted by the individual jurisdictions. It listed the pavement condition index (listed as PCI on the graphic below) for all nine counties and 101 cities in the Bay Area.

Novato ranked second in the “good” category with a score of 75 out of 100 in 2010, above the Bay Area average of 66 and well above the 60-point threshold at which “deterioration accelerates rapidly and the need for major rehabilitation becomes much more likely,” according to the report.

The MTC has established a 75-point score as a target for roadway quality in the long-range Transportation 2035 Plan it adopted in 2009.

Novato’s road maintenance has improved in recent years, the report said. The city scored a PCI of 65 in 2006, a 67 in 2007 and a 71 in 2009.
