Repaving Starts Wednesday Along 101 in Novato

Drivers should expect delays through September, Caltrans says.

Get ready for four months of traffic delays on Highway 101 in the southern part of Novato.

Starting Wednesday, drivers should expect delays as Caltrans crews begin to repave 101 between the Highway 37 interchange in Novato and North San Pedro Road in Terra Linda.

Caltrans said work will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on northbound 101, and from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the southbound direction so as to minimize the effect on the rush hour commutes. Onramps and offramps will be closed but not on consecutive exits, according to Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus.

The project, which is expected to last until September, will start with the grinding of existing pavement that has significantly deteriorated in the past several years, Caltrans said.

Crews will repave the highway with rubberized asphalt, a type of asphalt that incorporates recycled tires. More than 2.7 million pounds of tires, which would normally be deposited in landfills, will be used in the pavement, according to Caltrans.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes if necessary and remember that traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.

Work will be suspended during the Fourth of July holiday and Marin County Fair, Caltrans said.
