Redevelopment, Mills Restaurant Site Highlight Council Agenda

Tonight's meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Novato City Hall.

What to do with the remnants of the Novato Redevelopment Agency … that’s the task put forth before the Novato City Council on Tuesday night.

City staff members have recommended that the council serve as a “successor agency” to the redevelopment agency, by state bill as per the wishes of Gov. Jerry Brown. Now, the city needs to comply with Assembly Bill 936 and vote on formally accepting the reins from the redevelopment agency and handling its affairs.

If the council goes against the recommendation and declines that role, the successor agency will end up being another public agency such as the county government.

An affirmative vote will result in the city earning up to 5 percent of the redevelopment agency’s tax increment for the 2011-12 fiscal year and up to 3 percent per year after that.

Also Tuesday night, the council will consider a directed referral filed by Councilwoman Pat Eklund concerning the design of a new building that would replace the now-closed Mills Restaurant at 7370 Redwood Blvd.
