Marin County Receives Exclusive Budgeting Award

The North American finance association recognizes 'pioneering efforts' of Marin staff.

The following is a news release from the County of Marin:

Marin County has received the “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).  GFOA stated that the award “reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

Marin’s budget team had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated "proficient" by the GFOA in all four categories plus the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.

County Administrator Matthew Hymel said the timing of the award was particularly gratifying because of the hard work of county staff to respond to the budget challenges of the past five years.

“It is great that our budget team’s efforts to make the budget open and transparent have been recognized by the experts,” Hymel said.

The Government Finance Officers Association, a Chicago-based nonprofit, serves more than 17,800 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.
