Marin County Health Exchanges Overwhelmed as Consumers Scramble to Get Plans Before Jan. 1

Have you tried buying a new plan on the health insurance exchange?

Insurance brokers throughout Marin County have been overwhelmed with calls from anxious residents whose health insurance policies are being canceled come 2014 or who've had a hard time logging into the government health exchange, the Marin Independent Journal is reporting.

"We are so swamped," said Sue Barstow, who operates Ross Valley Insurance in Fairfax, told the paper.

"We are just buried," said Noah Petit, a broker with Sadler & Co. in Kentfield.

Millions of Americans have received letters from their health plans notifying them that with the start of Obamacare in 2014, they are no longer eligible. That, combined with the flawed roll out of the government website, has led to anger and frustration as consumers in the individual healthcare market, that is those not covered under employer plans, try to figure out what kind of plans they will have come January 1.

Kaiser Permanente, for example, has sent cancellation notices to 160,000 people in California, who make up more than half of the individual plans in the state, according to the story.
