Gardeners: Here's the Dirt on Healthy Soil

It may be winter now, but gardeners are still using those green thumbs. The County of Marin shares this primer about making sure the soil you use for gardening and landscaping is going to do its job.

Did you know that most of the antibiotics we use to fight disease came from life forms living in healthy soils?

But wait, isn't soil just dirt, sand and rock?

Find out on this attached video report from the Marin County Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures, created in conjuction with the University of California Marin Master Gardeners and Kay Productions. Learn more at University of California Marin Master Gardeners.

If you are like me and you love your garden but have been a total failure at creating compost you can purchase vineyard mulch and use it once you clean out all your bedding plants. It puts down both a layer of mulch and a layer of minerals for the soil. It smells pretty pungent at first but it looks so beautiful and the plants, flowers and trees love it. http://www.mcstoppp.org/acrobat/GrowingGardensFromGarbage.pdf http://www.treemasters.com/woodchips.html http://www.sonomacompost.com/product.shtml
