Council Approves New Senior Housing at Hamilton

Calls new project "invaluable" to community

Novato City Council approved a new senior housing development in Hamilton on Tuesday, a project council members described as invaluable given the rapidly increasing senior population in Marin County.

The 48-unit complex would be located at 801 State Access Road (off Nave Drive) and include a community room, a garden and pool. The apartments—designed in a Spanish eclectic style— are being built by Thompson Development, a Novato developer and will include nine units set aside for low-income seniors over 55 years of age.

“Marin County has the highest senior population among the nine Bay Area counties,” said Mayor Pat Eklund. “We need a lot more senior housing and we need assisted nursing facilities.”

Other council members praised the project for its amenities and for being located within walking distance to the future SMART station in Hamilton and Hamilton Marketplace.

The developer emphasized that the development will not be tax-exempt, meaning it would contribute property taxes for the city’s general fund.
