Cain Lane Improvements Started

The city's maintenance crews will begin a resurfacing project in response to public concerns over safety.

The city of Novato announced that on August 8 its maintenance crews began a resurfacing project of Cain Lane between Sherman Avenue and Reichert Avenue that should be completed by the week's end.

According to the city's website, this work is being done in response to concerns raised by both city council members and members of the public regarding general safety for both motorists and pedestrians. Cain Lane will not be widened or structurally modified at this time.

The proposed maintenance project will remove the existing broken pavement, grade the underlying base material and place approximately 3-inches of new asphalt to create a smooth and consistent roadway surface.

According to the city, this is not a permanent reconstruction project and it is expected that this work will last between 3 to 5 years.

In the meantime, staff will be working with Council to determine the final design of Sherman Avenue as part of the Civic Area Master Plan. It is intended that Cain Lane will be fully reconstructed as a component of the Sherman Avenue project.

Work will occur during normal business hours and should be completed within one week. Upon completion of the paving, the City said it will assume responsibility for ongoing maintenance along this portion of Cain Lane.
